Annapurna region is best described as the most happening incentive trekking destination of Nepal. The Annapurna Circuit Trek has been proved as a highly praised and spectacular trekking route in the Annapurna region since it opened to foreign trekkers in 1977.

This three weeks trek starts right from Besishahar and goes along the Marshyangdi River, with great view of Manashlu and Himal Chuli to the east. This magnificent trek leads you to the fine village inhabited by a wide diversity of people from different ethnic groups, offering spectacular and majestic view of the white Himalayas. As it continues to the north of the main Himalayan range on to the high and dry Tibetan Plateau, the scenery is equally breathtaking.

The highest point of the trek is Thorungla pass 5416m.

The highest point of the trek is Thorungla pass at the top of the valley at 5416m high. Due to the difficulties of crossing the pass, the circuit is usually walked in a counter clockwise direction. Traveling clockwise the longer ascent and shorter descent from west to east is too much for many peoples to manage in one day.

As we descend to the west at Muktinath from Manang, we continue to the the barren Tibetan like village of the kali Gandaki – the world’s deepest gorge passes between the giant Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountains. After you cross the Thorung La pass from Manang to Muktinath the final seven days of the circuit trek are the same as the Jomsom Trek from Pokhara, but in reverse.

Leaving Pisang, we have an alternate trails north and south of the Marsyangdi River which meet up again at Mungji. The southern route by Hongde, with its airstrip, at 3325m involves less climbing than the northern route via Ghyaru, though there are better views on the trail that follows the northern bank of the river.
Everest and Lhotse from Gokyo Ri

The trek begins at Jiri (1905m). The trail heads eastward through the lovely forested hills of Solu and over the 3530m Lamajura Pass. Monasteries and uninterrupted mountain views lie ahead. The portion of the trek from Jiri to Lukla is often quiet and therefore much better trekking country. We cross the Lamjura La and Thaksindo before descending towards the raging river of the Dudh Kosi. We follow the “Dudh Koshi river” north through terraced hillsides and small villages to join the main Everest trail below Lukla.

The Langtang valley trekking is great trek in Nepal. Langtang valley treks also called “the valley of glaciers trek”. Mountain View is excellent and surrounding spectacular views of mountains. On either side of valley, mountains rise, soaring in to the sky. The valley offers pain forest, slow moving rivers and swift mountain streams, rugged rock and snow- capped peaks.. In the upper part of valley there are snow bridges spanning angry torrents, high passes enveloped in mist, tiny lake with icebergs floating on them and water of crystalline brightness. There are also high mountains of solid ice.

View Everest and the surrounding Himalaya from favourite Sherpa viewpoints in the spectacular Thame and Gokyo Valleys. From jagged, snow-capped peaks, to Nepal’s largest glacier pouring down from the flanks of Mt Cho Oyu (8018m). Flying into Lukla we hike up to the Sherpa Capital of Namche Bazaar, visit the Hillary Hospital and Schools in the nearby villages of Kunde and Khumjung . Then we turn off the tourist trail and into the stunning Gokyo Valley – flanked by soaring peaks and turquoise lakes we will go to the some of the best and least visited Everest viewpoints in the Khumbu. We will then cross the beautiful Renjo La Pass and visit the monasteries of Thame, looking up to the still used Tibetan trading route of the Nangpa La (Pass).
This walk is designed to take you to some of the most incredible mountain scenery in the world, with the time to acclimatise safely and to be able to stop, absorb the view and take your photos. You will be accompanied by both highly experienced local Sherpa guides and an Australian guide/doctor.

Last week ExWeb ran a number of interviews and climbers paid tributes to lost friends. Only two expeditions remain on Greenland while outside Somalia, Pirates are changing their ways.

Broad Peak summit push Ludovic Giambasi, Eli Revol and Antoine Girard planned to set off towards Broad Peak’s S and SE ridges today Monday, for another summit push.

Iran for a new route Arash Mountaineers Club’s climbers led by Kiyoumars Babazadeh and supported by Abbaas Mohammadi, the new head of the Iran Alpine Club, hope to open a new route on Broad Peak’s SW side.

2008 South Korean K2 expedition back to Karakoram Last year, Go Mi-sun and Korean leader Kim Jae-soo summited K2. On descent, 5 of their expedition members perished. Three of the former expedition members are now returning to Karakoram. Following her Makalu-Kangchenjunga-Dhaulagiri triple this spring, Go and regular partner Kim are headed for both Gasherbrums and Nanga Parbat. With Annapurna in fall, Go hopes to bag no less than 7, 8000er summits this year.

The third member of the 2008 Korean K2 expedition Pasang Lama is also headed for both Gasherbrums, as a member in Altitude Junkies/Project-Himalaya team. Pasang summited Makalu and Lhotse this past spring.

More Gasherbrums The GIII/GIV team plans to establish an advanced base camp at 6000 meters and ventured up to 6300 meters last week to study the icefall in an attempt to determine the best way to make it into the cwm. Others who arrived BC on Sunday were happy to find the route through the icefall and up to camp one already fixed by Don Bowie, Bruce Normand, Guy McKinnon, William (Billy) Pierson and David Fält. An 11 member team from Tehran is on the way to GII, while recent Piolet d’Or winner Kazuya Hiraide is waiting in Hunza for Finnish Veikka Gustafsson before the two will set off towards GI in a few days time.

K2 A number of teams have reached K2 BC. Gerlinde and David survived a close call, when the team’s Jeep rolled back and fell down a cliff. Chilean climber Santiago Quintero is en route, without porters or supplementary O2. Having suffered serious frostbite years ago, Santiago’s project is called “K2 sin D2” (K2 without toes). Fredrik Ericsson and Michele Fait were denied permit to Laila Peak and went straight to K2. Nepal-based Rolwaing Excursion agency (founded by last year’s K2 summiteer Chhiring Dorje Sherpa) sent a note that before Serap Jangbu Sherpa, two Sherpas summited K2 in 1997.

Gerfried & Co in Nanga Parbat C1 Gerfried Göschl and his team were first to arrive in Nanga Parbat’s BC this year and have set up C1. A pic of the camp shot by Giuseppe Pompili shows serious avalanche paths nearby. Portuguese Joao Garcia and South Korean Miss Oh’s team are among other arrivals in Nanga’s BC.

Spantik: Pakistani lady climber Two Pakistani and a Dane make up the joint Pakistan-Danish Spantik expedition. “Remarkably, my fellow Pakistani mate is a girl – who may become the first local female climber to reach above 7,000 meters,” team leader Mirza Ali told ExplorersWeb.

Farewell to friends: Fellow Australian climbers and expedition mates praised Australian Mick Parker’s mountaineering values last week. Italian climber and polar trekker Michele Pontrandolfo submitted a tribute to Dr. Giuliano De Marchi, recently perished while ski-touring in the Dolomites. In Sichuan, the search for the third missing climber, Micah Dash, was called off last week. Fellow American climbers Eric DeCaria, Nick Martino, Steve Su, Pete Takeda, Nick Rosen and Mick Follari – who traveled to China to help coordinate search efforts – created a ceremony in Qongding for Micah, Jonny Copp and Wade Johnson.

ExWeb interview with Lena Laletina: the Russian view A bio-physicist and long time collaborator with ExplorersWeb; in an unique interview series last week Lena Laletina of RussianClimb.com unveiled the Russian take on climbing, politics, and media. Lena described the evolution from Soviet to Russian mountaineering; reflected on today’s ‘Brave New World’; and listed her own favorite climbers.

Flights cancelled due to bad weather and mounting waiting lists forced Karakoram-bound teams to hit the bumpy and exposed KKH for a 25 hour ride to Skardu; at times with police escort.

Climbers reported high security also in Islamabad due to recent bomb attacks. The weather is another issue, snow packed peaks are reported by mountaineers high and low: Following a hard, week-long attempt in heavy snowfall, the French climbers aborted their Broad Peak summit push last weekend.

In other news; Mick Parker died unexpectedly following his Makalu summit, and Wade Johnson’s remains have been found. On the Arctic Ocean; the recent North Pole to Greenland expedition brought out another set of pioneers – and AdventureStats.

Mick Parker found dead in Kathmandu He summited Makalu (his 5th 8,000er without 02) on May 21st; on June 4th Australian Mick Parker (36) was found dead in his hotel in Kathmandu. The results of the post-mortem indicate his death was a combination of exhaustion, lingering effects of HAPE and alcohol, Mick’s British climbing partner Roland Hunter told ExWeb.

Wade Johnson’s remains found on E Gongga A second body was found in avalanche debris on China’s E Gongga last week – it was identified as Wade Johnson, 24, of Boulder, CO.

Don Bowie, Bruce Normand, Guy McKinnon, William (Billy) Pierson and David Fält reached BC on June 4th. Bruce, Guy, Billy and Don are currently out on a five day-attempt to reach the col between Gasherbrum 3 and 4. Following GIII, the climbers also hope to give GIV a try. “The glacier is blanketed by fresh snows which have accumulated almost daily since we arrived a week ago,” Don reported end last week, worried about the hidden crevasses underfoot.

Serap Jangbu Sherpa’s 14×8000ers With 11, 8000+meter summits bagged and hoping to become the first Sherpa 14×8000er summiteer; Serap Jangbu Sherpa is headed for Broad Peak and GI. Should he succeed, he would have only Nanga Parbat to go – a goal he plans to attempt in 2010, he told ExWeb’s Karrar Haidri in Islamabad.

Joao’s plan Portuguese Joao Garcia hopes to turn Nanga Parbat – which he attempted already in 1996 – into his 13th 8000er. Teaming up with Pakistani Amin Ulla, his K2 mate two years ago, “we’re climbing buddies, no more,” Joao told ExWeb. “We are each carrying our own gear and Amin makes his own climbing decisions.” Sleeping in an altitude tent during his brief visit home in Portugal since Manaslu, Joao hopes for shorter exposure on Nanga Parbat. “I just need to climb to C2 (6,000m) once, and then I’ll be ready to attempt the top,” he said.

Castagna and Casarotto for BP+GI double header Italian climbers Cristina Castagna and Giampaolo Casarotto are headed for Broad Peak and GI.

Simone and Denis win the Eiger Award The prestigious Eiger award went this year to Winter Makalu summiteers Italian Simone Moro and Kazakh Denis Urubko.

One of the 10th classic and best white water journeys on Sunkoshi (river of gold) is in Nepal offers a longest river trip and the most fascinating among the few rivers, which flow down from snow-capped mountains. Big rapes, warm water, beautiful scenery and great camping makes this is a classic multi-day river trip. There will be a great trip for intermediate and advanced kayakers. At its best in medium to high flows. This enchanting river expedition of 9 days will definitely be the highlight of you visit to Nepal, its memory shall last for ever and ever . Sunkoshi is an unpredictable river, it has its own moods, serene, calm and tranquil one moment, wile and turbulent the next, always changing, always challenging, the ultimate in the river adventure. So, Sun Koshi is famous in rafting circles, and with good reason.

With in a short span or 9 days, you come in close contact with Nepal’s natural beauty, people, culture, wildlife and its rivers, its simply magic, an experience you shall be glad you took. En route to the Chatara you come across many ethnic groups, each unique and colorful as relatively more Rais, Limbus and Newar are seen in this area. In this trip you have 250 different species of orchids to look for. River chats, dippers, flycatcher, wall creepers, bulbuls, fork tales are a few of the almost 400 species of birds available around the basin.

Sunkoshi WaterfallThere are few more tributary of Sun Koshi as Rosi Khola, Junga Khola, Tamakoshi (Copper River), Dudh Koshi (Milk River), Rasuwa Khola. Tribenighat from where the Arun and Tamur join the Sunkoshi to form the giant Saptakoshi, which flows through Mahabharat range onto the Gangetic plain.

There are numerous (abundant) rapids such as Meat Grinder, Punch, and High Anxiety etc. Scaled from 3-8 will eventually emerges into the low land of Terai at Chatara. After 45-minute drive from Chatara you arrive in Dharan, which use to be British Gurkha Army recruiting center in Nepal for decades. Now you have several options as you can Drive to Biratnagar and take a flight to Kathmandu or drive to Chitwan National Park or Koshi Tappu for an excellent safari trip or drive back to Kathmandu.

Mr. Mangal Gurung was the first rafter to successfully take rafts in 1979 and he has the distinction of being the 1st Nepali to raft the Sunkoshi, it was a no mean success, hence, the rapid is named after him ‘MANGAL RAPID’.
